The mission of the Town of Avon Historian is to preserve and interpret the documentary history of Avon and make resources available to the public.
The Town Historian:
- Assists researchers with their inquiries;
- Curates subject files, original records, and archival collections;
- Creates historical displays and is available to give presentations on historical topics to all age groups;
- Attends events related to history and the community
Collections
By request, the resources available to researchers interested in the Town of Avon include:
By request, the resources available to researchers interested in the Town of Avon include:
- Subject files relating to Avon, ranging from Hotels and Schools to Businesses and Military;
- Over 250 family files containing genealogical correspondence and clippings;
- A large collection of photographs;
- A range of relevant reference books;
- Maps spanning the early 1800s to the present;
- Avon Central School yearbooks from 1944 to 2004;
- ...and much more.
Vital Records
New York State did not require town clerks to keep birth, death, and marriage records until about 1880; after that date, vital records are kept by the municipal registrar of the town in which the event occurred.
