Responsibilities and Services
The mission of the Town of Avon Historian is to preserve and interpret the documentary history of Avon and make resources available to the public.

The Town Historian:
  • Assists researchers with their inquiries;
  • Curates subject files, original records, and archival collections;
  • Creates historical displays and is available to give presentations on historical topics to all age groups;
  • Attends events related to history and the community
Collections
By request, the resources available to researchers interested in the Town of Avon include:
  • Subject files relating to Avon, ranging from Hotels and Schools to Businesses and Military;
  • Over 250 family files containing genealogical correspondence and clippings;
  • A large collection of photographs;
  • A range of relevant reference books;
  • Maps spanning the early 1800s to the present;
  • Avon Central School yearbooks from 1944 to 2004;
  • ...and much more.
Vital Records
New York State did not require town clerks to keep birth, death, and marriage records until about 1880; after that date, vital records are kept by the municipal registrar of the town in which the event occurred.
